We spent Saturday in Liege. Walked a lot. Went to the Archeology Museum listed in the town’s museum roster. The building is there. It is part of the University of Liege – but it’s certainly not open on Saturday. Okay, we’ll walk to the Cathedral of St. Bartholemy to see the baptismal font that they tout as a masterpiece. It’s only a mile or two out of our way. Of course, when we got there, the cathedral was under plastic wrap for renovations, and wasn’t open.
We tell you this not because we are cranky, but because this is a typical problem. Most of the things a tourist would want to see are within the small area of Center City – but small still means miles of walking every day. We really don’t begrudge the effort, though, because both of us are finding that this unaccustomed exercise is good for us!
We stayed so that we could go to the traditional market on Sunday. It was by far the largest we’ve seen, stretching literally for miles along the river Meuse. They sold everything – fruits & vegetables, dairy products, raw meat, cooked meat, sausages, nuts, candies, cakes and breads, olives, clothing including shoes and pocketbooks, fabric by the yard – and all kinds of small livestock (ducks, pheasants, chickens, roosters, chicks, ducklings, baby pigs, etc. Miles and miles. We only bought one backpack and one shopping bag’s worth! Then we took the bus back to the campground, ate lunch and left.
