The Amsterdam History Museum, devoted to describing the history of Amsterdam from the very beginnings when it consisted only of a tiny raised bit of dry ground surrounded by water. The Dutch got right to work dredging up sea bottom to create the rest of Amsterdam and the Netherlands as we see them today. Clear signposting allows the visitor to concentrate on a specific period of the Amsterdam's history:

The Van Gogh Museum houses some 200 paintings and 550 sketches showing Van Gogh in all his moods. These, combined with hundreds of letters by Van Gogh to his brother Theo, and selected works by his friends and contemporaries, form the core of the museum's collection.
